Union Dues and Recalculations

We have received inquiries from members regarding recent news concerning the recalculation of union dues within CUPE Local 399 (Outside Workers). We would like to take this opportunity to clarify how this affects—and does not affect—the members of CUPE Local 1048 (Inside Workers).

Separate Locals, Separate Bylaws

While CUPE 399 and CUPE 1048 share the same Collective Agreement, they are separate administrative and financial entities. Each local operates under its own unique set of bylaws which govern how union dues are calculated, collected, and managed.

The Situation in CUPE 399

We are aware that CUPE 399 is currently undergoing a dues recalculation process. This is specific to a situation where their historical collection practices may not have fully aligned with the language in their local’s specific financial bylaws.

No Impact on CUPE 1048 Members

We want to reassure our members that this situation does not apply to CUPE Local 1048.

Our Executive and Trustees have conducted a review and can confirm that CUPE 1048’s dues collection practices have always been, and continue to be, in full alignment with the language in our bylaws and Article 6 of our Collective Agreement.

Key Facts for Local 1048 Members:

  • No Errors Found: Our financial practices have remained consistent with our governing documents.
  • No Backpay: Because our dues were collected correctly, there will be no backpay issued to 1048 members.
  • No Monies Owing: 1048 Members will not be required to pay any adjustments for past dues.

For members who have recently transitioned between Local 399 and Local 1048, please note that any adjustments you may experience would only apply to the time you spent working under the CUPE 399 jurisdiction. Your records with Local 1048 remain clear and accurate.

If you have further questions regarding your specific dues or payroll deductions, please feel free to reach out to the Union office.

In Solidarity,

Reid Madisen-Boyce
